Safest Baby Sunscreen (2026): Mineral-Only, EWG-Verified Picks

The easiest thing to avoid in baby sunscreen is also the most common active ingredient in most US formulas: chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, and octinoxate. The FDA flagged these in a 2019 proposed rule as lacking evidence of safety for human use — a signal that most sunscreen brands have been slow to act on.

The alternative is straightforward: non-nano zinc oxide, a mineral that sits on the skin surface and physically reflects UV without absorbing into the bloodstream. Every product in this guide uses it as the sole or primary active. All six have EWG scores of 2 or lower. None contain fragrance, parabens, or oxybenzone.

What we look for

Non-nano zinc oxide — "Non-nano" means the zinc particles are large enough (>100nm) that they cannot penetrate intact skin. Nano-size particles can absorb through skin, which is why we reject them. Every product here discloses non-nano explicitly on their ingredient page.

EWG score ≤2 — The Environmental Working Group scores sunscreens from 1–10 based on ingredient safety data. A score of 1–2 means the formulation cleared their full review with low concern for hazardous chemicals. EWG Verified (used by all six picks here) is a higher bar: the brand submitted the complete formulation, including processing aids and residual ingredients, for independent verification.

No chemical UV filters — No oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, or octocrylene. The FDA identified these as insufficiently studied for safety in their 2019 proposed rule. The mineral alternatives — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on the FDA's "generally recognized as safe and effective" list.

Our picks

1. Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40 — Best overall

Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40

The Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40 is the pick for parents who want the most thoroughly vetted formula available. At 22.5% non-nano zinc oxide, it delivers SPF 40 coverage without synthetic UV filters, parabens, or fragrance. The cream texture is thick and applies white — a feature on infant skin where you want to see where coverage landed.

Badger holds both USDA Organic certification and EWG Verified status. The EWG score of 1 reflects a full-formulation review, including all inactive ingredients. Water-resistant for 40 minutes. Made in Gilsum, New Hampshire.

2. Raw Elements Baby + Kids SPF 30 Cream Tin — Best zero-waste

Raw Elements Baby + Kids SPF 30 Cream Tin

The Raw Elements Baby + Kids Tin uses the maximum effective zinc oxide concentration (25% non-nano) in a format the rest of the category has not matched: a reusable, plastic-free tin. No pump to clog, no tube to squeeze dry, no plastic to discard.

EWG Verified and certified organic. The wide-opening tin makes finger application easier than most squeeze tubes. At the beach or pool, a tin that sits flat without rolling into sand is a practical advantage. 80-minute water resistance. Reef-safe.

3. Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 — Best lotion texture

Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50

The Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 is the easiest to spread of the lotion-format picks here. At 20% non-nano zinc oxide and an SPF 50 rating, it covers more UV range than the SPF 30 formulas while maintaining a lotion weight that actually rubs out — a meaningful distinction when applying sunscreen to a moving toddler in under 60 seconds.

EWG Verified, fragrance-free, no parabens. The ingredient list is fully disclosed on Babo Botanicals' product page, including the organic certification status of the carrier oils. 80-minute water resistance.

4. Kokua Sun Care Hawaiian Natural Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50 — Best for travel

Kokua Sun Care Hawaiian Natural Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50

The Kokua Sun Care Hawaiian Natural Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50 carries the same 25% non-nano zinc oxide concentration as Raw Elements, but in a tube format that fits in a swim bag or diaper bag without risk of opening in transit. Kokua is reef-safe certified — a meaningful distinction since this formula was developed in Hawaii, where reef protection is most directly observable.

EWG Verified. No parabens, no synthetic fragrance, no chemical filters. Full ingredient disclosure on the Kokua product page. 80-minute water resistance.

5. Stream2Sea EcoStick Sunscreen For Kids SPF 35 — Best stick

Stream2Sea EcoStick Sunscreen For Kids SPF 35

The Stream2Sea EcoStick For Kids SPF 35 is the only stick format in this guide and the practical choice for face coverage on a child who will not sit still. No liquid, no dripping, direct glide on cheeks, nose, and ears.

Stream2Sea uses two non-nano mineral actives: zinc oxide (6%) and titanium dioxide (7%). Both are EWG Verified. The compostable EcoStick case distinguishes it from conventional plastic sticks. No parabens, no synthetic fragrance. 80-minute water resistance.

6. All Good Baby & Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 — Best sheer coverage

All Good Baby & Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30

The All Good Baby & Kids Sunscreen SPF 30 applies the most sheer of the six picks — 16% zinc oxide leaves noticeably less white cast than the 20–25% formulas above. For children who resist sunscreen because of the chalky look, this is the formula that gets applied rather than negotiated over.

EWG Verified. No synthetic actives, no fragrance, no parabens. Widely available at major retailers, which simplifies restock. 80-minute water resistance.

What we passed on

Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby and similar drugstore mineral formulas use zinc oxide but often include fragrance, parabens, or inactive ingredients that score poorly on EWG Skin Deep. "Mineral" on the label does not mean EWG Verified.

Kabana Green Screen: was on an earlier shortlist for this guide, but the brand voluntarily recalled lots 405-002 and 405-003 in July 2025 following FDA cGMP deficiencies and has since deregistered as an OTC drug manufacturer. The brand no longer sells sunscreens.

Chemical sunscreens broadly: any formula using oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, or octocrylene falls outside our criteria. The FDA's 2019 proposed rule identified these as not GRASE pending additional safety data.
